Senate Resolution

WHEREAS, the rapidly increasing complexity of technology requirements and critical infrastructure in cyber security has created a need to seek the development of information transfer, storage, and security solutions; and

WHEREAS, the rapidly increasing number of cyber-based threats and attacks have affected government, industry, and the citizens of this state; and

WHEREAS, there is an urgent need for the development of resources, capabilities, and expertise related to the establishment and operation of secure cyber facilities and associated infrastructure, and in supporting educational opportunities to facilitate an immediate transition from the classroom to the dynamic, multifaceted, classified work environment to include Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmentalized Information; and

WHEREAS, Auburn University has taken a leadership role in advancing the State of Alabama through the university’s pursuit of research, development, and promotion of cyber technology, both classified and nonclassified, including areas such as secure cyber facilities and networks, military and intelligence concerns, as well as facilities and critical infrastructure, to include financial systems, utilities, telecommunications, food systems, transportation, health care, and the health sciences; and

WHEREAS, through its research initiatives and relationships, Auburn University has achieved a unique position in supporting national security requirements at the highest level; and

WHEREAS, Auburn’s efforts will complement the state’s economic development efforts through technology transfer, commercialization of intellectual property, active recruitment of cyber security interests to the State of Alabama, and partnerships and collaborations with other research institutions and cyber-related entities across the nation, and in particular the Southeast, which will help attract industry to the state; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That in recognition of outstanding efforts on behalf of the State of Alabama, Auburn University is commended on its specialized initiatives and innovative approaches related to cyber security technology, research, and educational opportunities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Auburn University is encouraged to continue its pursuit of an expanded role in cyber security research on both a regional and national level in order to enhance the state’s potential, resources, and competitiveness in economic development in the cyber security arena.
